چکیده
We describe the structure, genomic organization, and some transcription features of a human brain-specific gene previously localized to the genomic region involved in temporal lobe epilepsy and spastic paraplegia on chromosome 10q24. The gene, which consists of six exons disseminated over 16 kb of genomic DNA, is highly homologous to the porcine tmp83.5 gene and encodes a putative transmembrane protein of 141 amino acids. Unlike its porcine homolog, from which two mRNAs with different 5 0-sequences are transcribed, the human gene apparently encodes three mRNA species with 3 0-untranslated regions of different sizes. Mutation analysis of its coding sequence in families affected with temporal lobe epilepsy or spastic paraplegia linked to 10q24 do not support the involvement of this gene in either diseases. q 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. The presence of long-range correlations and/or mosaicism in DNA sequences results in GC fluctuations, even within individual isochores that are much larger than expected correlation-free ‘random’ sequences. Neglecting the presence of such fluctuations can lead to incorrect conclusions regarding relative homogeneity or isochore borders. In this commentary, we address these and other methodologic...

Many chloroplast genes of cyanobacterial origin have been transferred to the nucleus during evolution and their products are re-addressed to chloroplasts. The RPL21 gene encoding the plastid r-protein L21 has been lost in higher plant chloroplast genomes after the divergence from bryophytes. Based on phylogenetic analysis and intron conservation, we now provide evidence that in Arabidopsis a nu...

Yeast and bovine cytochrome c oxidases (COX) are composed of 12 and 13 different polypeptides, respectively. In both cases, the three subunits constituting the catalytic core are encoded by mitochondrial DNA. The other subunits are all products of nuclear genes that are translated on cytoplasmic ribosomes and imported through different transport routes into mitochondria. Biogenesis of the funct...

To predict the amino acid sites important for the clearance of hepatitis C virus (HCV) subtype 1b in vivo, positively selected amino acid sites were detected by analyzing the sequence data collected from the international DNA databank. The rate of nonsynonymous substitutions per nonsynonymous site was compared with that of synonymous substitutions per synonymous site for each codon site in the ...

Ectodermal placodes contribute to the cranial ganglia and sense organs of the head and, together with neural crest cells, represent defining features of the vertebrate embryo. The identity of different placodes appears to be specified in part by the expression of different Pax genes, with Pax-3/7 class genes being expressed in the trigeminal placode of mice, chick, frogs and fish, and Pax-2/5/8...
